Just before o6:00 hours Saturday morning, box 25-2 was struck for the chicken house on fire on Oxford Road in Tyrone Township. Shortly after dispatch, a working fire assignment was requested followed quickly by the second alarm for a well involved chicken house fire with an approximately 100,000 live chickens inside. Engine 25 from the first due company Heidlersburg Fire Company arrived, pulled an 2.5" handline and began an exterior attack on the southern end of the building as fire was was through the roof. Truck 33 arrived, also setting up on the southern end of the building, but didnt get an adequate water supply preventing any aerial attack as the fire progressed down the approximate 50x800' building. Firefighters from several departments, including Gettysburg, Hampton, East Berlin, Arendstville began defensive operations as well as opening up an adjoinging tunnel to prevent the fire from extending into the other seven chicken barns. The fire was a total loss with firefighters being on scene all day. FIll sights for water supply were established in several locations including Shearers Mills creek, a pond at five points as well as in Hampton at the hydrant. Two injuries were reported to firefighters throughout the day.
